Rinjani Hiking Trails: Sembalun vs Senaru – Which is More Suitable?

Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, is one of the most beautiful and popular mountains in Indonesia. With a height of 3,726 meters, Rinjani offers spectacular views, from the vast savanna, the stunning Segara Anak lake, to the challenging peak. However, before starting the climb, climbers are often faced with an important question: choose the Sembalun or Senaru route?
These two routes have different characteristics, challenges, and beauty. Let’s discuss the comparison so you can choose the most suitable route.

Sembalun Route

  • Faster to the summit
Sembalun is the best route if the main goal is to reach the summit of Rinjani. From Sembalun post to Plawangan Sembalun (the last basecamp before the summit), the terrain is relatively open and flatter than Senaru.
  • Wide savanna views
This route offers wide and open grasslands, so you can enjoy the scenery along the way.
  • Technically lighter (at the beginning)
The terrain from Post 1 to Post 3 tends to be flat although quite long, suitable for warming up before facing tough climbs such as Bukit Penyesalan.
    Disadvantages:
    Open and hot
Because there are not many trees, this route feels very hot during the day.
  • Extreme final climb
The climb to the summit (summit attack) from Plawangan Sembalun is very steep and sandy, quite torturous.

Senaru Route

Advantages:
Shady tropical forest
The Senaru route is dominated by tropical forest with shady trees, providing coolness and protection from the heat of the sun.
View of Segara Anak Lake
Suitable for those of you who want to enjoy the beauty of Segara Anak Lake from Plawangan Senaru or even camp near the lake.
Suitable for beginners who want to be more relaxed
This route is more suitable for climbers who are not chasing the peak, but want to experience the beauty of Rinjani as a whole.
Disadvantages:
Further from the peak
It takes longer and more stamina to climb to the peak from the Senaru route.
The initial terrain continues to climb
Unlike Sembalun, the climb in Senaru has started since the beginning of the climb.
Which is More Suitable for You?

 | Destination | Recommended Route

| ——————————————– | ———————————— |

| Want to get to the peak quickly | Sembalun

| Want to enjoy the forest and lake | Senaru

| Beginner climbers want a light initial challenge | Sembalun

| Climbers who like a cool and lush atmosphere | Senaru

| Want a full Rinjani tour (go down via a different route) | Up Sembalun, down Senaru (or vice versa) |

Conclusion

Both Sembalun and Senaru offer an amazing climbing experience on Mount Rinjani. The best choice depends on your goals, physical condition, and personal preferences. If you want to get to the top quickly and like open savanna, Sembalun is the right choice. However, if you prefer a cooler route and want to enjoy the lakes and tropical forests, Senaru could be your favorite.Whatever your choice, the most important thing is to prepare yourself physically, mentally, and with good equipment, because Mount Rinjani is a challenging but very memorable climb.
